[edit] Software

Many of these are links to general optimization software, not just transportation related software.

  • CORAL Lehighs' research groups optimization software
  • iLog Makers of cplex and various other software applications
  • Dash Optimizatino Makers of XPress
  • AMPL "A Modeling Language for Mathematical Programming"
  • GAMS The "General Algebraic Modeling System"
  • Coconut Seems to be focused on non-linear optimization...
  • ESRI Makers of ArcGIS and other GIS related software
  • SoftScout Links to various commercial transportation software systems
  • Argonne National Labs Links to many optimization software systems from ANL
  • ASUs' Software Guide Hans Mittelmans' site also has links to various software systems
  • SOL Stanfords' Optimization Laboratory has some software they have available

Geoprocessing Software Performance Comparison:

At the core of any applied routing software is an engine to compute road-based travel distance and travel time values. The performance of any routing algorithm is highly dependent on the speed of this time/distance function call. I was recently able to run some tests comparing the time required for this function call in:

a) PC Miler version 22, b) Microsoft Mappoint 2010, c) ArcGis Engine (ESRI) 9.3.1,

I randomly generated lat/lon coordinates within "large" (approx 1000 x 1000 miles) and "small" (approx 30 x 30 miles) geographic areas within the US and used each software system to compute large numbers of time/distance pairs. I found the performance to be ranked in the same order I have shown for the software packages. The differences are significant. In the case of the "large" area, Mappoint took 3 to 6 times longer than PCMiler, and ArcGis took approximately 3 times longer than Mappoint. In the case of the "small" area, Mappoint took 4 to 8 times longer than PCMiler, and ArcGis took approximately 3-5 times longer than Mappoint. I was most surprised by the very poor performance of ArcGIS. Granted, its' main usages are not routing applications, but I had assumed that a well-established and widely used software would do better. It looks like Mappoint would be the way to go with small problems and/or small budgets, and PCMiler would be best for large problems and/or large budgets.
